Description
British Alpaca Yarn with Traceable Provenance
British alpaca yarn made from 100% fibre sourced from Redens Alpacas in West Sussex and spun in the UK by East Anglia Alpaca Mill, a specialist mill dedicated to alpaca fibre.
Redens Bay Black is a soft, smooth Aran weight yarn with beautiful natural drape and a substantial handle. It creates warm, fluid fabric with an elegant fall, making it particularly well suited to scarves, wraps, jumpers, cardigans and softly structured knitwear.
ts rich Bay Black is the natural colour of the alpaca fleece. Bay Black is one of the recognised natural alpaca colour classifications, a deep near-black shade with warm brown undertones, sitting just before True Black in the natural colour spectrum.
Completely undyed, the yarn allows the depth and subtle tonal variation of the original fleece to become part of the finished piece.
The colour of the animal, preserved in the yarn
Rather than introducing colour through dyeing, Redens Bay Black preserves the natural shade and tonal variation of the original fleece. The result is a yarn with depth, subtle movement of colour and the distinctive character of an undyed natural fibre.
Alpaca is valued for its softness, smoothness and ability to provide warmth without excessive weight. Its natural fluidity gives knitted fabric an elegant fall, particularly beautiful in designs where drape and movement are central.
From West Sussex alpacas to British-spun yarn
The fibre comes from Redens Alpacas in Rogate, West Sussex, a specialist breeder established in 2009.
Through carefully selected genetics, attentive husbandry and nutrition, Redens has developed a strong reputation for high-quality fleece, with particular expertise in black alpacas. Its breeding programme has received extensive recognition in the British show ring, reflecting a long-term commitment to fleece quality and animal care.
After shearing, the fibre remains in Britain to be transformed into yarn. It is spun by East Anglia Alpaca Mill, a specialist mill focused on processing alpaca fibre. Keeping both the fibre source and spinning within the UK creates a much closer connection between the animals that produce the fleece and the finished yarn in your hands.
Material character
Ultra-soft and smooth with a fluid handle and excellent natural drape.
The fuller Aran weight creates a more substantial fabric while retaining the softness and movement characteristic of alpaca. It knits up relatively quickly and is particularly well suited to warm scarves, jumpers, cardigans, relaxed garments and softly structured layers.
